College Courses for K-12 Students
Dual enrollment means taking college-level classes while still working toward earning your high school diploma.
There are two types of dual enrollment offered through CMC’s Dual Enrollment Program:
- CCAP: Dual enrollment courses offered through the College and Career Access Pathways (CCAP) agreement. Classes are taught by high school teachers on the high school site.
- Non-CCAP: College courses taught by CMC instructors and attended by other college students
Students who want to participate in dual enrollment may choose to participate in CCAP, non-CCAP, or both.
To get started you need to complete a CMC application, get permission from your parent/guardian, and get approval from your school.
If you have questions at any time, contact the Office of Student Services by calling 760.366.3791 or email the Dual Enrollment team.
Starting Your Dual Enrollment Journey
- Create a CCCApply account and apply to CMC online. Once your application is received, you’ll receive an email with your CMC student ID number and your MyCMC Portal account information.
- Once in your MyCMC Portal, locate the CMC Student Orientation card and click on the link for Student Orientation. You must earn a minimum of 80% on the Orientation Quiz to pass.
- Review and complete the CMC Dual Enrollment Parent Agreement Form (only needs to be completed one time) and the CMC Non-CCAP Dual Enrollment Petition. A new Non-CCAP Dual Enrollment Petition will need to be completed for each semester non-CCAP classes are being requested.
- All forms and petitions should be completed and submitted to CMCDualEnrollmentGroup@cmccd.edu no later than two weeks before classes start.
- You will receive an email from Admissions & Records indicating your petition has been processed and registration has been completed.
CCAP vs. Non-CCAP Dual Enrollment
College-level classes, but you pick the setting.
- Classes
Both CCAP and Non-CCAP dual enrollment classes are considered college-level classes.
CCAP: You take college-level classes at your high school; they are taught by high school teachers. Fellow students are high school students. You work with your high school counselor to schedule these classes.
Non-CCAP: You take college-level classes directly with the college; they are taught by college instructors. Fellow students are college students. You can select any course where you meet the prerequisites except English as a Second Language (ESL), Physical Education (PE), or Developmental Education (DE) courses.
- Cost
CCAP: No direct cost to you – it’s considered part of your high school enrollment. This includes textbooks.
Non-CCAP: Short answer – it depends!
Are you currently or have you ever participated in a CCAP class through CMC’s Dual Enrollment Program?
- YES: There is no cost for tuition, however, students will be responsible for the cost of textbooks and supplies.
- NO: Students will be responsible for the full cost of tuition, textbooks, and supplies.
Students who are responsible for cost may file for financial aid (FAFSA or CADAA) to see if you qualify for a tuition waiver, which means you do not pay
enrollment fees. For more information regarding financial aid, please visit our Financial Aid webpage. - Books
CCAP: Books are provided, just as they are for high school classes.
Non-CCAP: You buy the books each course needs.
- Enrollment Process
CCAP: Initiated through the K-12 school site. Once approved, student completes the CMC application, CMC Student Orientation, and submits a completed CMC Dual Enrollment Parent Agreement.
Non-CCAP: Student applies to CMC and completes the CMC Student Orientation. The student will need to submit a completed CMC Dual Enrollment Parent Agreement Form and the CMC Non-CCAP Dual Enrollment Petition to provide the needed signatures. You don’t need to develop a First-Year Plan.
Note: A new CMC Non-CCAP Dual Enrollment Petition will need to be submitted for each semester a student is requesting non-CCAP classes.
- Registration
CCAP: Your high school sends us class rosters. We complete your registration.
Non-CCAP: Registration is completed by CMC when all of the required forms are received. Students are notified by CMC student email.
- Grades
Any grades earned as part of CMC’s Dual Enrollment Program will become part of your permanent college record. Completed courses will transfer to any college or university, with exception to a few private colleges and universities.
So, how do you receive your grades?
CCAP: Grades appear directly on your high school record.
Non-CCAP: Grades sent to your high school for your record.
What You Need to Know
Parents Need Student Permission
Under federal law, your parents and guardians can’t access your college-level academic records without you saying so. To give them permission, you just need to fill out a Release of Information Form at the beginning of each academic year. This will need to be done in-person so contact your CMC counselor or the Office of Student Services.
Classes Fill Up – Get Your Papers in Early
Submit your class request as soon as possible; if you wait until the last minute, your course could fill up and it won’t be available anymore.
Before anything, make sure you meet the prerequisites for any course you want to enroll in. If you don’t, you won’t be able to register in the class.
Double check everything with your counselor to make sure everything is in order before you submit your classes. Some classes aren’t available for dual enrollment. It never hurts to make sure everything is in order.
You Can’t Take All the Classes
If you’re attending CMC through the Dual Enrollment Program, there are a few classes you won’t be able to take. These classes are:
- Physical Education activity classes (PE)
- English as a Second Language (ESL)
- Developmental Education (DE)
- Any class you don’t meet the prerequisite(s) for
Know the Rules and Your Resources
Participation in the Dual Enrollment Program is based on approval by your K-12 school site. To continue your education, you will need to:
- Be approved by your K-12 school each semester; and
- Maintain a GPA of 2.00 or above.
There is a unit cap for all dual enrollment students. Students who are taking classes at the K-12 school and directly with CMC (CCAP and non-CCAP) may take up to 15 units; students only taking non-CCAP classes may take up to 11 units.
You are a CMC student and can use all of the resources available to any other CMC student. Some of the most commonly used resources include:
- CMC Catalogs
- Schedules of Classes
- Tutoring & Academic Support Center (TASC)
- Financial Aid
- Undocumented Student Resources
- CMC Scholarships
Bottom Line: It’s College
Dual enrollment is college. You take on more responsibility for your schedule, for planning, and for following through. You’ll be approved for courses that are part of an associate degree program, if you meet the requirements and the prerequisites.
