March 21, 2025

Hello, this is Jane Kwon, Vice President of Student Services, giving a report on the regular board meeting from March 13th.

We had two public comments. One on a proposal to change the college name to Joshua Tree Community College and another on concerns about the current effects of the federal government orders on education and the community.

The student showcase was from student Jada Woods, who was brought forth by her instructor, James Henderson. She did an amazing job highlighting her journey and barriers to get to where she is today. As a person and the success and confidence she now has as a college student. The institutional self-evaluation report will be going to the board for a first reading at the next April board meeting. Thank you to all of those who continue to work diligently on the completion of our ISER.

The sabbatical request from Dr. Anamika Basu, professor of biology, was approved, and we are excited to have Dr. Basu have this opportunity to enhance our Biological Sciences program to benefit our students.

The board discussed candidates for the California Community College Board. Being from a small college and rural college was the focus of our board in nominating the candidates.

Last but not least, the board approved the tentative agreements between the CMC Faculty Association and the district. For the next board meeting, Sandy Smith will be giving a presentation on the history of CMC and the biannual special joint meeting with MUSD board will be held on April 22nd.

Next week is spring break and the college will be closed on the 26th for Classified Professionals Day and on the 28th for Staff Spring Break. I want to thank the board and Dr. Otten for this opportunity to lead the March board meeting, and I hope everyone has a wonderful spring break.
